Proud Dad

I’m keen to get my kids into gaming and modelling (opponents for the future as well as some useful life skills). Here is my son James’ work on the painting table. He painted this on his own except for the eyes which I helped with. The model is a Hobbit blind bag about 60mm tall. My thought was that this was good starter model because it is bigger than 30mm models. They are also reasonably cheap at about a pound a go….

We also made a Revell Star Wars kit of a Tie fighter cos who doesn’t love Star Wars. James needed a bit more help here as it is pretty fiddly to build but great fun on a rainy Saturday in April.

Pete’s Dragon

A good friend of mine from work recently kindly gave me a Tom Meier Red Dragon that he’d bought in the 1980’s. This weekend I painted it and hope I did it justice. I went for a green colour scheme as I have a GW WOTR dragon which I intend to paint red at a later date. Here’s the finished beast…

As way of progression on how I painted it some more photos follow. First the box…

There was a good bit of cleanup to do, 80s moulds! Also filled gaps with green stuff and bend the tail round.

Primed with GW chaos Black

Then base coated with a dark grey and green mix

Now all green using various shades and dry brushing techniques

I put it on a GW oval base. I will use it as a Drake (dragon) for War of the Ring.

I added some GW skulls and sand to the base for interest.

I painted the base brown then dry brushed a little for the finished effect. Here it is again from the reverse angle.
Thanks for the model Pete and I hope you like it.

Vikings and Goblins progress

Brief update this week as little time to painted, but some progress made.

First the Vikings. Basic spray job. GW Skull White on the levies and warriors. Army Painter chainmail for the Hearthguards and Warlord. Next step basic colours and a dip! Note the magnetic strip on the 20mm by 20mm Rendra base.

Here are some sprayed WOTR Goblins, note Gothmog, Gollum and Druzhag getting ready for action. The Egyptian is from a National Geographic kids mag for my daughter. Well paint it up gold and blue

Oh here’s the finished Tutankhamen

Giant Spiders for WOTR

I got this idea from the web but have lost the reference sorry.

Basically GW giant spiders cost £8.20 for two and there aren’t many on eBay. So I bought these plastics spiders for about £2.50 from the bay (12 in pack – search ‘plastic spiders’

They look like this in the wild. BTW my kids love them

I’ve base-coated them black as they are a bit gaudy and they’re ready to play with. I will add some red bits to make them a bit more interesting and do some basing stuff later. I’ve got 48 of them in total, all for about a tender. GW ones would have cost over 200 quid!!!

Renovating a Balrog

Here is a balrog I bought off eBay. It’s the eBay picture I was too keen to get started before I stripped it it detox, then paint thinners. Note that the thinners is very strong and smelly stuff. It melted the Inge and the base, so I repurchased them.

So there’s the stripped and re-assembled balrog. I love the pose of this model and look forward to painting it

The second picture has a warg chieftain in it too (well I couldn’t resist it when I was on the GW site buying the new wings.

More pics to follow as things progress.
